While live plants help reduce levels of nitrate in your tank – if not properly cared for – they will start to decay and may increase the nitrogen levels in your aquarium. This may throw off the balance of beneficial bacteria and introduce harmful nitrates into your ecosystem, which can be lethal to your fish.

Depending on the level of maintenance you’re willing to perform for your aquarium, investing in artificial plants may help you save time and heartache later on. Generally speaking, a good balance between natural and artificial plants are ideal. Having Aquarium Chillers are also recommended, if you don’t have live plants to bind organic waste and produce essential oxygen.
